Edgemate Stone Tools began in the basement of Bob’s home more than 8 years ago. Bob made his living remodeling old homes, building custom millwork, cabinets and furniture. He was introduced to the stone industry when he did is first tops for some furniture and thought he would attempt to do the granite for his own kitchen. During the process he became annoyed by the ripples in a flat polished edge and thought there should be a jig to hold the polisher with more accuracy.
So he started the design of this jig and in three weeks he had a working prototype. The first prototype had a few issues. The roller blade wheels were marking up the face of the stone and the slurry was locking up the movements of the machine. Even with these issues, the prototype worked surprisingly well. So he created the next version to solve these issues.
His next version had the grinder moving a full 180 degrees traveling on a c-arms and the machine rolling on a track to protect the stone. When this version survived several kitchens, he filed for a patent. He then went looking to have someone manufacture these gizmos, and was disappointed to find out how much it would cost just to do the computer drawings of the prototype and to program the CNCs to make the parts. As time went on he decided the only way to get this manufactured was to invest his time to teach himself how to do computer aided drawing (CAD). He had no computer skills and didn’t even know how to cut and paste so the learning curve was steep. After drawing his first parts, he found out the drawings were not compatible with the machine shop’s software. The machine shops still wanted to redraw them. So he decided to buy his first CNC mill to put in his basement. He tells his wife “if I figure this CNC stuff out, we’re in trouble, because the possibilities are endless.” After learning how to do the computer drawings and with the accuracy of computer aided machining, he realized the possibilities for new machines for the stone industry.
The company has moved out of his basement and now has four CNC machines all producing different parts for Edgemates in Waconia, Minnesota and Edgemate is well positioned to release other new products for the stone industry.
